IP (ingress protection) ratings, and what they mean for your charging devices

Any charger has a special IP marking on the body or its elements (International Protection Marking). Equipment from the American market may not have it, since it is part of the UL standard. The classification IP characterizes the degree of protection from dust and water.

The first figure characterizes the possibility of ingress of external solid objects, sand and dust into the body or its elements, which may affect its operation. The graduation of the dust-protective functions of the enclosure is divided from 0 to 6 steps.
The second figure characterizes the possible penetration of water or other liquids through the equipment body, which may affect its operation. The gradation of protection from moisture is divided from 0 to 9 steps.

Compliance with the standard is determined by the test method and is regulated by the European standard IEC 60529 (DIN 40050 – standard for Germany). If the equipment does not pass the test according to one of the classifications, the symbol X is displayed instead of the numbers. That is, the equipment that has not been tested or the moisture resistance has an IPXX marking.

Dust protection table (first digit):

0 The charger body is not protected or there is no protective body.
1 ≥ 50 мм Most of the equipment surface is unprotected. There is no protection from conscious contact with open parts of equipment.
2 ≥ 12,5 мм The case is protected from finger and small objects.
3 ≥ 2,5 мм The body is not accessible to hit the tool without opening the body. Open holes are smaller than the charger cable.
4 ≥ 1 мм The case is protected from access to internal wires and large objects.
5 Dust protection Dust can get inside the case but do not disrupt the charger. Protected from direct contact.
6 Dustproof Dust can not enter the charger housing. Full protection against contact.


Moisture resistance table (second digit):

1 Vertical drops Vertically falling drops do not affect the operation of the charger.
2 Vertical drops at an angle of up to 15 ° Vertical droplets do not interfere with operation if the charger body is tilted at an angle of up to 15 ° from the operating position.
3 Falling Spray Protect from splashes of rain. The spray falls vertically or at an angle of up to 60 ° to the plane.
4 Spray The case is protected from light splashes falling in any direction.
5 Jet The case is protected from light water jets in any direction.
6 Sea wave Protection against hitting the body of a sea wave or a strong water jet. If it enters inside the charger, it does not interfere with the operation of the charger.
7 Short-term immersion in water to a depth of 1 meter In the case of short-term immersion up to 1 meter, water can enter the housing in quantities that do not affect the operation of the charger. Constant work in the immersed state is not expected.
8 Diving to a depth of more than 1 meter, duration is more than 30 minutes The charger is provided for continuous operation in a submerged state.
9 The impact of a jet of water with a high temperature The charger can operate under high-temperature washing conditions and high-pressure water flows.

Based on the classification, observe the following operating instructions:

IP44 The case of the charger is not designed for permanent use in open spaces.

IP54 The body of the equipment is provided for permanent use in the open space under a canopy.

IP65 Equipment body provides for installation in an open space. The equipment can withstand light rain, snow but it is not calculated for work in the shower.

IP67 Equipment body provides for use in the open space in heavy rain and snow.

The degree of protection of the connectors may differ from the case. Connectors must be covered with protective caps or connected. If a double protection circuit is provided in the equipment or the power grid, moisture can not affect its operation, and monitoring of current loss will protect the user from damage.

Equipment marked with a degree of protection corresponds to the maximum conditions of the specified operation. If you plan to use it for many years and do not limit yourself to the warranty period, create conditions for comfortable operation of the equipment. Install the equipment under the elemental coating, even with a degree of protection IP67. This will ensure its reliable operation for many years of exploitation.
